Ok, so a for while now, I’ve been eyeing up the Cricut (for those scrappin’ friends or just crafty friends I am sure you know what I am talking about). It’s fairly pricey and wasn’t sure I could justify buying it since as mentioned in the past, scrapping fell by the wayside when photography took the front seat. Let’s rewind back to early November… as I was punching various shapes and using the schools die cut machine to make embellishments for our holiday cards to the soldiers, the Cricut found it’s way back into our conversation.
Fast forward to Thanksgiving. Dinner is done, the dishes are washed, the company is gone and Shawn and I are sitting on the couch reading the black Friday ads. He notices the Cricut is on sale at a few places. I think about it, and tell him, I will get it eventually but not now. We talk about it some more but I don’t change my mind esp. since I haven’t scrapped in forever. Well, lo and behold, when I wake up around 9 the next morning, my brand new Cricut machine is on the floor on my side of the bed. Yes, he was up and out before the crack of dawn to get just one thing…for me not even for him. He is just the best. I really was surprised. It came with one cartridge but throughout Thanksgiving weekend Wal-Mart, Michaels, Joanns, etc, had great sales. By the time Thanksgiving weekend was over I had the 12×24 Cricut machine and about 8 different cartridges to go with it. Woot!
I have used in quite a few times already for various projects and posters (mitten tree, snow much fun, etc) and am glad I have it. It has a few flaws but it actually is a pretty amazing. So whether you scrapbook or not, if you have kids in school, like to be involved in different fundraisers, etc…I highly recommend the Cricut. It is so multi functional. When it cuts the object is can shadow it, do it in layers, it has functions for card making, the possibilities really are endless.
A few of you have mentioned to me about actually seeing something made with the Cricut… so the latest thing we did with it was Matthew’s science project, which was due today. Their latest science unit has been really interesting. It was all food based…they studied things on slides, they learned about various nutrients, etc. They just ended the unit with a section on carbs. For their project they had to write a poem about a carb and have the poem in/on the food they were writing about…
He wrote about…

you guessed it, cake!!!! His poem is on the inside. To make this, we cut the base layer of the cake (blue with dots) and then we selected the top layer (white icing layer). He glued the 2 layers together and boom..he has a cake! It had to be double sided so he did that twice. It had to open, so we used the eyelets to hold it together but it still allowed for it open (the poem is inside)
When I picked him up from school today his teacher told me she loves it so much and wants to know if she can keep it as a sample for future classes. I told her we’d like to keep Matthew’s but we’d be happy to make her one…any excuse to play with my new toy!
