The school year may be starting to wind down but we are still busy beavers over here at our school. This morning we had a kick off assembly for our newest community service project (gone global)… Pennies for South Africa. We were fortunate enough to have a speaker from the South African consulate of Chicago come today. His slide show was very informative to say the least. It is absolutely amazing (and heart breaking) to see how the majority of South Africans live. Did you know that their schools have no heat or water? Yes, that means no bathrooms within the school. You should have saw the kids faces when he mentioned that. And I don’t think the kids were able to fathom that they don’t have video games over there.
After Mr. VanN was done speaking, we had a surprise for him… our students worked hard to learn S. African songs, dances and music. He was very touched. Matthew’s grade played a song on their recorders. They worked very hard at learning it and if I must say so myself, they did a fantastic job. Max’s grade sang We are marching to Pretoria.
So here’s hoping that next’s weeks “penny wars” is successful! It’s nice to know that we are helping make the world a better place. I, myself, look forward to the pics they told us they will send with the students using supplies that we donated!
I haven’t looked at all my pics yet, and I am sure you don’t want to see all the kids at our school…lol but here is Matthew while he was playing his recorder.
