{Pennies for South Africa}

The  school year may be starting to wind down but we are still busy beavers over here at our school.  This morning we had a kick off assembly for our newest community service project (gone global)… Pennies for South Africa.    We were fortunate enough to have a speaker from the South African consulate of Chicago come today.  His  slide show was very informative to say the least.   It is absolutely amazing (and heart breaking) to see how the majority of South Africans live.  Did you know that their schools have no heat or water?   Yes, that means no bathrooms within the school.  You should have saw the kids faces when he mentioned that.  And I don’t think the kids were able to fathom that they don’t have video games over there.

After Mr. VanN was done speaking, we had a surprise for him… our students worked hard to learn S. African songs, dances and music.  He was very touched.  Matthew’s grade played a song on their recorders.  They worked very hard at learning it and if I must say so myself, they did a fantastic job.  Max’s grade sang  We are marching to Pretoria.

So here’s hoping that next’s weeks “penny wars” is successful!  It’s nice to know that we are helping make the world a better place.  I, myself, look forward to the pics they told us they will send with the students using supplies that we donated!

I haven’t looked at all my pics yet, and I am sure you don’t want to see all the kids at our school…lol but here is Matthew while he was playing his recorder.

{Guess who}

Guess who got a new bike today!!!!!  To say she was/is excited is an understatement….I am not sure why we didn’t get her a bike last year.. maybe it’s because she had her tricycle and scooter and car and….. and didn’t seem to want/need a bike but I knew this year she would be getting one.  So, today being in the 80′s… a day we could spend outside seemed like the perfect day to go pick one out.

In action as soon as the bike got out of the car…

Funny story.. this is just how girly my girl is… she had picked a pink helmet which was fine… UNTIL she saw this purple one… but mom I want this one… it matches my bike better than the pink one… oy!

And to continue with the girl-y-ness… I was not allowed to leave the store without her new soccer ball… afterall, how could she go to soccer on Tuesday (it was canceled this week due to rain) with a ball that doesn’t have pink on it???  Now to convince her that she can not wear her flip flops to soccer….  remind me why I signed her up…oh yeah…to be with her friend…

{earth day}

Well, earth day wasn’t as warm as we expected it to be… but we did manange to go out barefoot for a few and just enjoy the feeling of the grass between our toes…
