58/365 {next stop…}

Any guess as to where this is… a few of you *should* know….

57/365 {S’s H I…part 2}

The inside was very neat…looked like a bunch of chalets in the Alps.  A stone fire place in the snack bar, fun figurines and pics all around but our favorite by far was the Zamboni.  Another bonus to our day… we walked in just as hockey practice was ending and the zamboni was getting ready to clean the ice.  Bet you’ve never seen a zamboni quite like this one… isn’t it cool? (that isn’t grain on my pics, it’s netting so the puck doesn’t get into the stands)

The fire place wasn’t on and some one was sitting on the hearth so I didn’t get  a pic of it, but I was able to get this cute little sign above it.  The Warm Puppy was the name of the snack bar area.

The only disappointment was that Shawn really wanted a replica zamboni to put in his office and can you believe that they don’t sell one.  They sell a postcard of it, but not small replica, a magnet, keychain…nothing.  I think they are missing out by not doing it but oh well.  Instead of adding to his zamboni collection (not that he has tons, but he does have a few) he added to his puck collection.  It says Snoopy’s Home Ice with the pic of him skating with the hat on.  It’s cute and made a nice addition to his shelf.

56/365 {Snoopy’s Home Ice}

Evident in his cartoons, Charles Schulz  loved ice sports…his favorites being hockey and figuring skating.  So, next to his Museum and Research center in Santa Rosa he built Snoopy’s Home Ice.   It is nestled among towering Redwoods, with faithful reproductions of Swiss chalet facades and panoramic scenes from the Swiss Alps.   Snoopy’s Home Ice feels like an Alpine village in a Redwood Forest. It is truly a magical place.  I’ve never been another ice rink remotely close to this…and I’ve been in my share.  We actually had no idea this was here, we only knew about the museum.  With Shawn being a huge hockey fan, this was such a fun bonus!

55/365 {Purim}

Purim is a festival that commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people of the ancient Persian Empire from Haman’s plot to annihilate them, as recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther.  Purim is characterized by public recitation of the Book of Esther (keriat ha-megilla), giving mutual gifts of food and drink (mishloach manot), giving charity to the poor (mattanot la-evyonim), and a celebratory meal (se’udat Purim);[1] other customs include drinking wine, wearing of masks and costumes, and public celebration.

Today was part 1 of 2 of Sydney’s Purim celebration in school…it was the carnival.  The kids all dressed in the costumes they made from pillowcases which came out darling..(didn’t get a great shot of it today.)  She chose to be Queen Esther, as did all the girls…lol

54/365 {Charles Schulz Museum}

Now that you have seen most of the outside (there are some other fun figures and benches with characters), let move on to the inside otherwise we’ll be here forever…lol.   Photography was not allowed in the majority of the inside which was probably a blessing…ha ha.  In the entry hall were a few more character type things for photo ops, which my kids did cooperate and took some more pics but other than that, the hands on art room and my pic below, that was it for pictures.

As you might imagine, the museum was filled with all sorts of Peanuts memorabilia, lots of facts and trivia, over 6,000 comic strips themselves, including preliminary drawings, a replica of Charles’ studio, including his personal memorabilia (not peanut related).  The photographs that were showcased were amazing, some dated back to 1910 (this my friends, is why pictures are an important of life) showing Charles drawing , receiving awards, hanging with his family, etc.  The replica set-up of his studio was really neat too.  The kids enjoyed the space ship they were able to play in, which was part of “Snoopy goes to space”.  If the peanuts were part of your childhood, I am sure you remember this.   They also enjoyed the hands on art studio where they were able to draw, color, create their own comic strip, etc.  (pics were allowed in that area).

Also on dispaly is a nursery wall that Charles painted for his daughter.  It was painted in 1951, and over 50 years later, after being painted over, it was un-earthed and the historic wall was transferred to the Schulz Museum to be on permanent display.  Pretty cool, huh?

Think that was cool, well how cool is this…

This mural measures slightly larger than 17 x 22 feet and is composed of 3,588 Peanuts comic strip images printed on individual 2- by 8-inch ceramic tiles. So cool!

And in a nutshell that was our time at the Charles Schulz Museum…but have no fear, there will still another post about Snoopy, because you know what’s next door to the museum…. stay tuned.

53/365 {lumberjack day}

In 4th grade, social studies primarily focuses on WI history.  Apparently, lumberjacks are part of WI history and to tie in with this area of study, every year the 4th grade has lumberjack day.  Today was lumberjack  day  and of course I was there …

What is lumberjack day you ask…let me tell you…but first grab you flannel shirt and get in the spirit because all the kids did!  It’s great that they get so into it…I just love it!

It all starts around 9am with a lumberjack style breakfast… pancakes, hash browns, Canadian bacon, milk and oj…(Max is waiting for his pancakes).

They even get to keep the mugs as keepsakes, if they want.  How cute is that?  After they’ve eaten their hearty breakfast, they were divided into groups and off they went to 8 different lumberjack activities in which they rotated through all of them.  Activities were both indoors and out and most of them were races… sack races with sleeping bags, a river rafting log game, dressing up as a lumberjack relay, tug of war, 3 legged races, sled races

after you round the cone, you switch…

and one of the favorites, pass the wood and stack it…totally a team effort here…it was like they were on Survivor…lol

Now that they burned off their breakfast, it was time for lunch.  After lunch they went back to their classrooms for some lumberjack stories and to write letters to home, another popular lumberjack activity.  They finished the day “around the campfire” (in the cafeteria) where they sang a few songs and snacked on sinkers (aka donuts) and apple cider.  ( I didn’t take any pics of Max at snack time, I thought I’d give him a break…ha ha)

Such a fun day for the kids and truly a great way to learn about lumberjacks.  Even though they had a ton of fun, they were all pretty beat and realize lugging wood around is hard work.  When they voted, they all said they are glad they aren’t lumberjacks…lol.

Phew, I am pretty tired too, spending all day at school circulating through it all taking lots and lots of pics.  I didn’t catch Max at everything but I got a good sampling.

Now to crop and edit the 200 plus pics and make a slide show…being a mom is harder than being a lumberjack, my work is never done… lol :)
